Adventure Education Program

Here is quick glimpse into the Adventure Education Program the Grade 7 and Grade 8 students are enjoying here at M.C. Knoll. Thus far, we have experienced fitness training at Benno's Fitness and billiards at Pockets.

Sorry about the delay in posting today's message. I just finished (with a lot of help from a student) an interactive poster for bullying. You will be able to admire the handy work during the interviews Wednesday and Thursday evening.

Also, our 6/7M class will now recieve some extra help from the school's educational assistants during some of our Math classes. This should now optimize students learning and understanding with the subject area.

Reminder: there will be no school on Friday, Nov. 28 in lieu of the parent-teacher interviews.

A very busy week (or two) is ahead of us here at the school. First off, report cards will be handed out on Friday, Nov. 21. Thus, a newsletter should have been sent home today in regards to parent-teacher interviews. If there are any problems with the timetable for the interviews, please contact the office.

Grade 7 students will be hosting the bake sale for this month on Friday, Nov. 21 as well. A small green-colored information slip was sent home last week.

MacKenzie Art Gallery

Here are a couple photos of what the Grade 7 and 8 students experienced yesterday in Regina at the MacKenzie Art Gallery. Students enjoyed an exhibit from a well-known Saskatchewan artist by the name of Bob Boyer. Ask your son/daughter about it!

Grade 7 students are off in the a.m. to Yorkdale for Practical and Applied Arts . Grade 6 are with me at M.C. Knoll. Immediately after lunch, their will be a school-wide Halloween parade in the gymnasium. At the conclusion of the parade, Grade 7 students will walk over to St. Mike's for the "sock hop". Grade 6 will be with me enjoying a snack and movie. Grade 6 students are encouraged to bring food/drink to the festivities.

Just another quick reminder:

The grade 7 students will be heading to Regina tomorrow to attend an exhibition at the MacKenzie Art Gallery. We will be departing at about 8:00 and will return about 4:00. Please ensure that your son/daughter is on time, as well as having the appropriate tools to survive the day (jacket, lunch/money, etc.).

I hope everyone had a terrific weekend. In class today we accomplished a number of things. First off, students learned the difference between absolute and relative location in Social Studies. They also learned what a simile and metaphor are in Language Arts. Lastly, Grade 7 started their (short) new unit in math - Relationship between Decimals and Fractions.

Secrets of the Underground Railroad Exhibition

Here is a glimpse into the awesome tour that 6S and 6/7M attended in Melville of the Secrets of the Underground Railroad. I think the students are now a little more appreciative of how "good" life is nowadays. Ask your son/daughter about it...

A Typical Day in our Classroom

These are just a few examples of how learning takes place in the 6/7 classroom - in small learning groups. Within each group, students are encouraged to utilize each others strengths. I always tell the students that "three or four brains are better than one"!!!

I am very pleased to announce that our 6/7M classroom has officially been given a SmartBoard. It was installed yesterday and is fully operational. This is an extremely useful tool that will make learning that much more fun. Ask your son/daughter about it...

In addition to the field trip to Melville, Grade 7 will also attend a field trip to Regina's MacKenzie Art Gallery on Thursday, October 30. This will be a whole-day affair. Please refer to the new newsletter that I sent home today with your son/daughter about this field trip.

Throughout the day today, we accomplished a number of things:

- Grade 6 started their new math unit "Addition and Subtraction of Whole Numbers".
- Grade 7 learned how to divide decimals in math (a continuation of their "Decimal Numbers" unit).

- The entire class has just recently started a novel study for "Island of the Blue Dolphins". We have not read anything yet from the book.
- The entire class continued to learn about Ecosystems as part of their science unit.
